3D Mapping
The bespoke 3D mapping engine allows the visitor to their surrounding area from an aerial view but with fully rendered 3D terrain, giving them the power of Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth in their hand.

Using this information they can gauge the land ahead of them and the difficulty of the terrain, steepness of ascent and descent simply by rotating the 3D view or zooming into the landscape. This will help them to determine the best route to take, depending upon the activities they are engaging in, their fitness and abilities.

Information such as walking routes and the map data itself could be easily downloaded straight to the handheld device or transferred from a PC to the device before leaving home, these routes could be created by other users who have walked the area or from one of the many professional databases of walks which can be found today. Items like Points of Interest could also be included to provide the user with interesting facts and information as they walk a chosen route, with the software and handheld device acting as a ‘Virtual Tour Guide’.

Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality provides users with the ability to learn and interact with environments that would just not be feasible in real life. Users can now get as close to objects, animals and people as they like without the risk of harm or disturbing their environment, whilst still creating an engaging and fun way to learn.

With a handheld device using a built-in camera users aim for a unique symbol which could be located on a plinth, table, a wall or any other type of surface. This symbol will tell the device the angle at which the user is viewing from and produce a 3D rendered object on the user’s screen with the object looking as if it is there in real life. As the user moves around the object, the device will recognise the angle and change the view of the object accordingly.

3D animations of Samurai’s performing their practice routines, knights jousting and dangerous animals such as snakes and bears can be viewed in close up detail at any time of the year, no matter what the conditions or time of day. The AR exhibits never need a rest and they will never fail to perform.

Optical Flow
Optical Flow canl bring old castle ruins, stately homes and other historical sites to life offering the user the chance to experience what life was like many centuries ago.

The system uses a handheld device with a built-in camera to calculate the movement of the user as they scan their surroundings, viewing a 3D rendered scene of the area on the device’s screen.

3D rendered scenarios that could be created include royal feasts in banquet halls, sieges and attacks on the ramparts of castles and ceremonies made by monks in their abbeys many centuries ago.

This would provide any user with a greater degree of interactivity with their environment and allow them to see how life was many centuries ago without the need for lengthy pieces of text or complicated illustrations - everything will literally be in the palm of their hand.
